A Glorious Year in Women's Soccer: Reflecting on the Top 5 Moments of 2023
Introduction:
The year 2023 has been an absolute whirlwind for women's soccer, with remarkable events and achievements that have left an indelible mark on the sport. As a passionate fan, I've witnessed history unfold on the pitch, from the excitement of the FIFA World Cup to the retirement of legendary players and the resurgence of women's soccer in Boston. Here, I share my perspective on the top 5 things that made 2023 an unforgettable year in women's football.
1) Australia and New Zealand Hosted a Spectacular World Cup:
The anticipation and excitement reached new heights as Australia and New Zealand co-hosted the FIFA Women's World Cup. The tournament showcased the brilliance of women's soccer and the incredible progress the sport has made globally. Spain emerged as the ultimate victors, lifting the coveted trophy after a thrilling final. However, what struck me most was witnessing England's journey – from being crowned European champions the previous year to making it to the World Cup finals. This not only solidified England as a top national team but also underscored the coaching prowess of Serena Wiegman, who has now etched her name as a legendary coach in women's soccer history.
2) Farewell to Legends – Rapinoe, Krieger, and Sinclair:
The retirement of iconic players is always a bittersweet moment for fans, and 2023 bid farewell to three legendary figures – Megan Rapinoe, Ali Krieger, and Christine Sinclair. Megan Rapinoe, a beacon of activism and skill, leaves behind a legacy that includes two Olympic gold medals and a World Cup triumph. Ali Krieger, a defensive stalwart, contributed immensely to the success of the United States, while Christine Sinclair, the all-time leading goal scorer in international women's soccer, closed her illustrious career with grace and accomplishment. Their impact on the game will resonate for generations to come.
3) Mary Earps' Goalkeeping Excellence:
Mary Earps took the goalkeeping world by storm in 2023, sweeping awards and earning well-deserved recognition for her outstanding performances. As she dominated the goalposts, her achievements went beyond personal accolades – they inspired a new generation of aspiring goalkeepers. The significance of Mary Earps' success was further highlighted when her jerseys sold out within 24 hours, signaling a powerful response from fans who had previously lamented the absence of goalkeeper jerseys. This not only showcased the growing popularity of women's goalkeepers but also highlighted the positive shift in how their contributions are celebrated.
4) Gotham FC's Remarkable Turnaround:
In a stunning turn of events, Gotham FC emerged as the NWSL champions, clinching the title after finishing last in the previous season. The team's resilience, strategic planning, and remarkable performances on the field reflected the unpredictable and captivating nature of women's soccer. Gotham FC's triumph serves as a testament to the competitiveness of the NWSL and the unpredictable outcomes that make the sport so exhilarating for fans.
5) NWSL Returns to Boston:
A nostalgic moment unfolded in 2023 when the NWSL announced the return of women's professional soccer to Boston. After the unfortunate folding of the Boston Breakers in 2018, the announcement of NWSL Boston brought joy and excitement to fans in the region. The revival of women's soccer in Boston not only reignited the passion for the sport but also provided a platform for talented players to shine on the national stage.
Conclusion:
As a fervent follower of women's soccer, 2023 has left me in awe of the incredible achievements, memorable moments, and the continuous growth of the sport. From the grandeur of the World Cup to the retirements of legends, the rise of Mary Earps, Gotham FC's remarkable turnaround, and the return of NWSL to Boston – each element contributes to the rich tapestry of women's soccer history. As we eagerly anticipate what the future holds, these moments will forever be etched in the hearts of fans, celebrating the resilience, talent, and sheer joy that women's soccer brings to the world.
Player Spotlight
Meet Alex Iadarola from our 2011 DPL team, our January Player Spotlight! She spills the beans on her top team and players to watch, shares favorite coach advice, reminisces on a standout playing memory, and gives us a peek into her downtime delights.
Coach Highlight
What is your favorite team to watch?
My 2011 Girl's team of course, but the USWNT would be my next favorite team to watch
Who is your favorite player(s)?
Duffy, Megz, Casey, D, Yaya, Scar, Mad Dog, Maris, Anna, Cali, Hailey, Han, Ky, Colby, G, Molly and Carly Lloyd
What is your coaching philosophy?
"Catch Them Being Good” and letting everyone in earshot know it. Repetition in technical foot skills training. Then the game becomes the teacher and the player become creative
Tell us about your favorite personal soccer memory (coaching or playing).
There are so many, since I have been coaching soccer non stop for 26 years. Probably looking over to see that I am coaching against a 99’er that I have watched play on the USWNT for years; Kristine Lily
Why did you get into coaching?
My son wanted to play soccer in the first grade with his friends. The team couldn’t participate, unless a parent volunteered. I volunteered his dad…enough said. I quickly became obsessed with coaching and soccer thanks to it being the era of the 1999 USWNT and the movement to grow Women's soccer. I quickly became the Director of Development in town, a District Select coach and started my own club in 2009
What do you hope is the legacy you leave with each of your players?
That the players know they can achieve whatever they set their mind to if they put on the work consistently. And that I was and always will be here for them.
What was your most successful moment as a coach?
Being sick on game day, calling the captains to let them know they can be successful if they do exactly what we do very games day, but it was up to them collectively. Then getting the call from them cheering that they had been successful under their own leadership.
What is your favorite quote?
“If they cant score they cant win"
Other than soccer, what is your favorite sport? Futsal
Did you play soccer as a youth?
I never played soccer until after I started coaching U8 boys. I quickly organized a Women's team so I could play.
What would be something we don't know about you?
I am part owner of a Women’s Serie C team Femminile Riccione Calcio in Riccionne, Italy
